Skadi’s Ice Crystal Dice Bag Pattern

Why It’s Called the Skadi Icicle Crochet Dice Bag?

The Skadi Icicle Crochet Dice Bag is named after Skadi, the Norse goddess of winter, mountains, and skiing. She’s strong, sharp, and connected to cold landscapes and snow-covered peaks. When I designed this bag, I was inspired to name it after the character from the book The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec, where Skadi appears as a fierce and memorable friend to the FMC Angrboda. If you love nordic mythology, or myth retellings from a new perspective, that book is absolutely worth reading. This dice bag carries that same icy strength into your game night setup.

Why DND & TTRPG Players Will Love This Dice Bag

I find that TTRPG players tend to love gear that feels like it belongs in the world of their campaign. This bag doesn’t just hold dice. It looks like it came from a frost giant’s stronghold.

The post stitch texture gives it a structured, scale-like finish that feels solid in your hand. It’s medium sized at 4 inches wide and 6 inches tall, which means it holds several sets of dice comfortably without feeling oversized on the table. The drawstring closure keeps everything contained, even when you toss it into a backpack.

It’s an intermediate skill level pattern, because of the post stitches, but otherwise straightforward. If you’ve worked textured crochet before, this will feel satisfying rather than complicated. And it works up fairly quickly, which is always a win in my book!

For players who enjoy a strong character aesthetic – think winter clerics, frost sorcerers, mountain rangers, ice dragons – this bag fits right in.

Other Uses for a Drawstring Dice Bag

Crochet drawstring bags are practical, and surprisingly versatile.

If you don’t have a dice collection? You could also use one for:

  • Storing crystals or small altar tools for a mythology lover

  • Keeping stitch markers and crochet notions organized

  • Holding jewelry while traveling

  • Carrying small board game tokens or miniatures

  • Protecting earbuds, chargers, cords, drives, and other tech bits

  • A tooth fairy pouch for kids who love fantasy stories

Drawstring dice bags also make cool gifts for:

  • Your Dungeon Master

  • A fantasy-loving teen

  • A book club friend who loves fantasy stories too!

  • A mom for holding calming tools like fidget items
  • Anyone who likes functional small bags with a bit of story behind them

Teachers could use a drawstring pouch like this for:

  • Holding dry erase markers so they’re not rolling around

  • Keeping reward tokens or classroom prize tickets organized

  • Storing dice for math games and classroom activities

  • Carrying hall passes, lanyards, or classroom keys

  • Keeping USB drives or presentation clickers in one place

  • Stashing personal items in a shared desk space

Choosing the Yarn for your Ice Crystal Dice Pouch

To create a more realistic Icicle Crochet Dice Bag Pattern you will want to choose a yarn that is both durable and ideally a stiffer fiber. I opted to use cotton yarn to crochet my dice bag, and picked one of my favorite cotton yarns – Premier Cotton Sprout. This yarn is a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend it. While it is cotton yarn, it is softer than other cotton yarns and has a very low tendency to split while working, so it’s just really nice for working and the end result is good too. There are also a lot of colors to choose from, making it easy to get just the right look for your project.

Another great yarn to use for this pattern is Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton. This is a mercerized cotton, which makes it a very smooth yarn to work with, and it’s a little sheer which give a nice “icy” sheen to your bag too! The yarn has a unique chainette 1 ply design, so it’s not going to split on you like other cotton yarns either. And Lion Brand has recently come out with a bunch of new colors, which means lots of great options to choose from here too!

You can also use other animal fiber yarns like wool or hemp, or a stiffer acrylic yarn and achieve great results too. I recommend a stiffer and sturdier yarn for this project to give your corners and sides the most angular and crystalline look. One of my testers used a black yarn with metallic thread woven through it and created a “Black Ice” version of the bag which is pretty cool too! There are lots of possibilities for creating this bag, just give some thought to your fiber choice. And I do love a bag made from stash yarn too… I’m all about stash busting and using what you’ve got, that way you save money and the planet in one go.

Skadi Icicle Crochet Dice Bag Pattern:

CROCHET PATTERN DIRECTIONS:

USING G/6 4.0 – 4.25 MM HOOK

Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, ch 1, 10 hdc in magic circle, sl st to join, (10 hdc).

Round 2: Ch 1, (2 hdc) in each st around, sl st to join, (20 hdc).

Round 3: Ch 1, [hdc in next st, (2 hdc) in next st,] 10 times, sl st to join, (30 hdc).

Round 4: Ch 1, [hdc in next 2 sts, (2 hdc) in next st,] 10 times, sl st to join, (40 hdc).

Round 5: Ch 1, [hdc, ch 1, hdc in next 7 sts, ch 1, (2 hdc) in next st, hdc in next 5 sts, ch 1, hdc in next 6 sts,] 2 times, sl st to join, (6 ch-1, 42 hdc).

Round 6: Ch 1, [bphdc, hdc in ch-1sp, bphdc in next 6 sts,] 6 times, sl st to join, (6 hdc, 42 bphdc).

USING G/6 4.0 – 4.25 MM HOOK

You will now be working 3 post stitches for each of the 6 corners of the hexagon, worked so that there are 2 post stitches on the inside of the bag (support) and one post stitch on the outside (corner), to give it a stronger shape. The exterior post stitch should fall between the 2 interior post stitches for each of the 6 corners. All post stitches should be stacked (worked atop one another) for each subsequent round.

Round 7: Ch 1, [bphdc, fphdc, bphdc, hdc in next 5 sts,] 6 times, sl st to join, (6 fphdc, 12 bphdc, 30 hdc, 48 sts).

For the Rounds 8-17 you will be turning work at the beginning of each round and working in the opposite direction, every other round. This will help keep the post stitches stacked and keep the location of the post stitches/corners from slanting as you work.  Even rows are worked on the Wrong side and Odd rows are worked on the Right side.

Round 8: Ch 1, turn, [hdc in next 5 sts, fphdc, bphdc, fphdc,] 6 times, sl st to join, (12 fphdc, 6 bphdc, 30 hdc, 48 sts).

Round 9: Ch 1, turn, [bphdc, fphdc, bphdc, hdc in next 5 sts,] 6 times, sl st to join, (6 fphdc, 12 bphdc, 30 hdc, 48 sts).

Rounds 10-17: Repeat Rounds 8-9, alternating. (48 sts, 8 rounds).

crochet ice dice bag tutes CPin

USING G/6 4.0 – 4.25 MM HOOK

You will now be working just 1 fphdc for each corner and no longer turning, so all rounds will be Right Side. Round 18 will decrease by skipping both bphdc at each corner and form an edge of the crystal by using bphdc to make the top of the bag, like in Round 6.

Round 18: Ch 1, [skip bphdc, fphdc, skip bphdc, bphdc in next 5 sts,] 6 times, sl st to join, (6 fphdc, 30 bphdc, 36 sts).

Rounds 19-22: Ch 1, [fphdc, hdc in next 5 sts,] 6 times, sl st to join, (6 fphdc, 30 hdc, 36 sts, 4 rounds).

Round 23: Ch 1, [fphdc, hdc in next st, ch 2 and skip next st, hdc in next 2 sts, ch 2 and skip next st,] 6 times, sl st to join, (12 ch-2 sp, 18 hdc, 6 fphdc, 36 sts).

Round 24: Ch 1, sl st in each st and ch-2 sp around, sl st to join, (36 sl st). FO and weave in ends. Continue with Drawstring.

USING G/6 4.0 – 4.25 MM HOOK

FINISH YOUR ICE CRYSTAL DICE BAG:

DRAWSTRING CLOSURE (Choose 1 style)

SINGLE DRAWSTRING: (Make 1)

Ch 111, FO and trim ends. Weave drawstring through the spaces in R23. Tie in a bow to close or use a toggle or other cinch if desired.

DOUBLE DRAWSTRING: (Make 2)

STEP 1: Ch 81, FO and trim ends.

STEP 2: Weave drawstring through the spaces in R23, and knot the ends together. Repeat with the other drawstring, weaving through the same holes, but place the knotted ends on the opposite side. Pull both knotted ends away from the center to cinch the bag.
